DCCB City Lighting Initiative

Lighting is the number one deterrent of crime. Well lit areas aid the residents and law enforcement agencies in keeping our neighborhoods safe. The District Council Collaborative Boards in conjunction with the Rutgers-University Criminal Justice Department’s class under the leadership of Lt. Dan Howard launched the North Camden Lighting Project.

The project began in the fall of 2010. It evaluated lighting in select sections within the community and identified the lights that were not in service. With assistance from PSE&G Electric, the end result of the project was brighter and cleaner streets. The Rutgers University students developed maintenance plans so the community members can continue to sustain lighting in their area.

In addition, a Project Porch Light Campaign was launched to encourage residents to light up their homes. For as little as $2 a month, residents can aid the community in keeping our streets well lit during evening hours. With the support of Rutgers University students, this campaign was a huge success. The class installed new porch lights in 35 North Camden residences and they distributed over 100 light bulbs to residents who agreed to turn on their lights.

The Lighting Analysis and Project Porch Light Campaign developed by the class continues with the District Council Collaborative Boards taking on lighting citywide.
